Today we went through 3 different lessons on Canvas: 1: Developing a Healthy View of Self, Coping with Stress and Loss, and Coping with Mental Illness. We took all three self-checks and we watched the ted talk about stress together. We wrote words on the board for how we cope with stress and then we learned about various coping strategies: healthy and less healthy.

Today was a short day. We spoke about our Emotions. Here is a list from Brené Brown of our key emotions. Then we did a short mediation on Emotions while you wrote down an emotion and the experience that caused you to feel that emotion.
Then we crumpled them up and put them in a bucket. Then you randomly drew one of your fellow students non-identifying experiences. Then we tried to be even more vulnerable by doing a Cross-The-Line activity. Your Personality Collages are due tomorrow! Hey guys! So today is online learning day. Your assignments are on Canvas. Go through the Communication PowerPoint, do the journal entry, take the quiz and do the Communication PowerPoint Question assignment.
Today we discussed our PERSONALITIES. We have our Personality or Self Collage Due on Friday January 14. The assignment is described in Canvas but is something I want you to print off and bring in physically to class as we use it as part of a class activity. We first defined Personality:Your personality is the unique combination of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that makes you different from everyone. Each person is so incredibly unique genetically and then you take the combination of your life experiences and how you personally experienced them, well, YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME in your individuality. I had you listen to two very personal songs while you completed the journal entry for today in Canvas (personality journal entry). They are A Mother Like You by JJ Heller and The Things We've Handed Down by Marc Cohn. While we were listening to the songs you filled out the personality journal entry in Canvas. Then we watched a short clip about Attachment Theory. Make sure to watch this little clip to the very end as it explains that you aren't stuck being the way you are. The key is acknowledging certain characteristics and assertively working to change the way we see others and our world. We also discussed Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs. These needs are crucial and we must achieve the lower needs at the bottom of the pyramid in order to move forward.
I wanted to also help you understand the Health Triangle and how it consists of a very delicate balance of Social, Mental and Physical Health and how much they all affect each other. I did a demonstration by taking out a $100 bill and asking who would want it. Everyone of course raised their hands. Then I crumpled it, stepped on it, sneezed on it etc. and asked who will still want it. Most of the students still raised their hands. When asked why the answer was usually "It is still worth $100, no matter what". This is how Individual Worth works. We all have incredible value regardless of our experiences and upbringings; sometimes because of our experiences we can actually add more value and contribute beautiful things to the world around us. But what affects our Self-Esteem or how we feel about ourselves. Students volunteered to come up to the board and write words to represent things that could affect people in our community, students of Lone Peak's, self-esteem. Words like: Friends, teachers, money, grades, How we treat others, how others treat us, friend groups, etc. appeared on the board. Some of these things we have no control over. But some of them we do. The first thing we talked about was Self Talk and I showed this short YouTube video. We discussed embracing our child-like love for ourselves as well as others. In my first period we also watched this video clip with an amazing quote. Our Deepest Fear. I encouraged you all to be FEARLESS. I am out sick today. Please go through the Decision Making PowerPoint found in Canvas and type notes into the assignment. Then take the 16 Personalities Test and make a post in the Category that you tested in. Then you may start to compile the necessary pictures for your Personality Collage or begin working on your Resiliency Project.
Today we talked about "Who we want to be and how we get there!" This would mean that we have to have some goals, but goals focused not on the outcome like straight A's, not on the process, like studying for an hour every day but on who you want to be "a life-time learner, a future doctor" and then think about what it will take to get there. We filled out a goal worksheet and you turned them in for participation credit. I will be returning them next period. You learned where my box is to turn things in and some of you turned in your disclosures and your Human Sexuality permission slips. (You can find these on Canvas). I re-announced the Self-Collage due next Friday and the Resiliency Project due at the end of the month. Both of those assignments are found on Canvas as well. We watched another quick Prince Ea Video. We also did our first Meditation from my Calm App today. Everything you do, thoughts you have should be towards you finding your joy and accomplishing your goal of BECOMING who you want to be. That is your main takeaway from today. Lastly, did the journal entry in Canvas for Decision Making.
Welcome to Health!! I introduced myself to you and we went over the disclosure and the Human Sexuality permission slip. Bring those back next time! We watched a short Prince Ea clip and I divided you into pairs and you interviewed each other and presented each other in front of the class. We will be doing Healthy Self for our first unit. I informed you about 2 upcoming assignments in Canvas: one is the Resiliency Project due the end of January and the other is the Personality Collage due the end of next week. We also all wrote on the board as a class ONE WORD that we want to use to represent our hopes for 2022. So excited for this semester of Health!!!
