Today we discussed our PERSONALITIES. We have our Personality or Self Collage Due on Friday January 14. The assignment is described in Canvas but is something I want you to print off and bring in physically to class as we use it as part of a class activity. We first defined Personality:Your personality is the unique combination of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that makes you different from everyone. Each person is so incredibly unique genetically and then you take the combination of your life experiences and how you personally experienced them, well, YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME in your individuality. I had you listen to two very personal songs while you completed the journal entry for today in Canvas (personality journal entry). They are A Mother Like You by JJ Heller and The Things We've Handed Down by Marc Cohn. While we were listening to the songs you filled out the personality journal entry in Canvas. Then we watched a short clip about Attachment Theory. Make sure to watch this little clip to the very end as it explains that you aren't stuck being the way you are. The key is acknowledging certain characteristics and assertively working to change the way we see others and our world. We also discussed Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs. These needs are crucial and we must achieve the lower needs at the bottom of the pyramid in order to move forward.
I wanted to also help you understand the Health Triangle and how it consists of a very delicate balance of Social, Mental and Physical Health and how much they all affect each other. I did a demonstration by taking out a $100 bill and asking who would want it. Everyone of course raised their hands. Then I crumpled it, stepped on it, sneezed on it etc. and asked who will still want it. Most of the students still raised their hands. When asked why the answer was usually "It is still worth $100, no matter what". This is how Individual Worth works. We all have incredible value regardless of our experiences and upbringings; sometimes because of our experiences we can actually add more value and contribute beautiful things to the world around us. But what affects our Self-Esteem or how we feel about ourselves. Students volunteered to come up to the board and write words to represent things that could affect people in our community, students of Lone Peak's, self-esteem. Words like: Friends, teachers, money, grades, How we treat others, how others treat us, friend groups, etc. appeared on the board. Some of these things we have no control over. But some of them we do. The first thing we talked about was Self Talk and I showed this short YouTube video. We discussed embracing our child-like love for ourselves as well as others. In my first period we also watched this video clip with an amazing quote. Our Deepest Fear. I encouraged you all to be FEARLESS.
